Satellites orbiting Earth in various altitudes form the backbone of the global space business. Their main purpose is either communication, enabling navigation, or observation/science. In recent years, all three main satellite segments have seen significant innovation, which has led to considerable market shifts and ultimately growth.

Communication Satellites

New antenna technologies and software-defined radios, as well as mass-production techniques, have enabled the proliferation of novel communication satellites as well as cost-efficient constellations of communication satellites, mainly in low-earth orbit (LEO) and mid-earth orbit (MEO). Bandwidth can be gained and security enhanced with the introduction of optical communication (laser links). As space debris adds to the challenge of managing orbital infrastructure in LEO and MEO, future generations of satellites will likely be more autonomous to avoid collisions - or other threats. Safe high-speed on-board Ethernet networks are seen as an enabler for both more autonomous satellite platforms as well as higher throughput digital communication payloads, including optical links.

Observation and Science

Innovation in optical and radar payloads, as well as modular design, has resulted in a democratization of this market segment: Many new companies have come up with great solutions, which are either offered as a platform or a service, and this trend will continue. Operating in crowded orbits, the challenges will be similar to the ones for communication satellites, but innovation will remain high and unit volumes low, so interoperability and modularity will be key. Here, Ethernet-based solutions may be a key to building scalable platforms where additional payloads can be added without compromising system integrity or losing communication bandwidth.
