This project aims at fostering Europe’s leading-edge position in embedded systems engineering. In particular, it regards the quality and the cost effectiveness of safety-critical embedded systems and architecture platforms. Its overall goal is to enable sustainable paths to speed up the maturation, integration and cross-sectorial reusability of technological and methodological bricks of the factories for safety-critical embedded systems engineering in the areas of transportation (aerospace, automotive and rail) and healthcare, providing a critical mass of European technology providers.
CRYSTAL perfectly fits to other ARTEMIS projects, in the sense that it shares the concept of a reference technology platform (RTP) as a set of integration principles and seamless technology interoperability standards. Based on the methodologies of a service-oriented architecture and the results of previous projects, CRYSTAL focuses on an industry-driven approach using cross-domain user stories, domain-specific and public use cases as well as technology bricks. This shall have a positive impact on strengthening Europe’s competitiveness in the areas of new markets and societal applications.
This project will moreover contribute to establishing a standard for model-based systems engineering in a certification and safety context, which is expected to have a global impact in the overall interoperability domain “embedded systems”.
By bringing together large enterprises and various industrial domains, CRYSTAL will setup a sustainable innovation eco-system. By harmonizing the demands in the development of safety-relevant embedded systems, including multi-viewpoint engineering and variability management across different industrial domains, CRYSTAL will achieve a strong acceptance from both vendors and the open-source community.
CRYSTAL will drive forward interoperability towards a “de facto” standard providing an interoperable European RTP.
TTTech has started its CRYSTAL activities based on an integrated computing platform hardware (called automotive infrastructure platform) suitable for highly automated functions for use in the automotive industrial domain. The long term perspective is to connect such platform to the internet and to other vehicles of similar kind (i.e. all road users). Such a hardware platform is the starting point for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to enable function development and design, including later integration in a vehicle for large scale industrial purpose deployment.
Several software tools used to configure such platform are designed and developed within CRYSTAL. These tools and the platform will be connected to the IOS requirements (interoperability specification) in order to allow seamless interoperation with other tools integrated in the IOS approach. TTTech will also design and develop suitable middleware for the automotive infrastructure platform.
At the beginning of the design process, TTTech will study in depth the IOS description and specification to design and develop the proper interfaces to the outside tools environment, following the IOS requirements. Based on this investigation, the involvement of TTTech for the definition of CRYSTAL requirements will be captured. TTTech will then develop the CRYSTAL bricks for the automotive infrastructure platform enhancement and the configuration tools. In cooperation with AVL Regensburg, TTTech will set up a demonstrator showing the platform capabilities and integrate the automotive infrastructure platform using the framework of the IOS into a higher level CRYSTAL demonstrator. An automotive use case shall be demonstrated using the backbone available from AVL, integrating the developed items into the complete set-up. The use case will be based on the AVL motor simulation use case, integrating a “golden motor”.
