Dependable Embedded Systems

The major objective of the DECOS project was to develop a set of generic hardware and software components within the framework of time-triggered architecture. DECOS aimed at enhancing Europe's competitive position in technology and high-tech application areas. A basic enabling technology was developed to provide an integrated distributed architecture.

Such an architecture is able to combine mixed-criticality applications from different vendors, in order to reduce development and maintenance cost. Additionally, the dependability of embedded applications can be increased. The project covered cluster design, middleware and code generators, as well as validation and certification for highly dependable applications.

As to the results achieved, DECOS was one of the most successful project proposals even submitted to the EC in the field of embedded systems. Its high standing is a direct function of the great strength of its industrial and academic partners. Partners of this project were, among others, Airbus Deutschland, EADS Corporate Research Center, Infineon Technologies, Esterel Technologies, Audi Electronics, Venture Centro Ricerche Fiat and a number of leading universities. ARC Seibersdorf research coordinated the Integrated Project.

TTTech's specific role was the implementation of a partitioning operating system, middleware components, advanced network technologies, as well as network and component level tools. The partitioning operating system allows executing a set of mixed-criticality applications on the same hardware, prohibiting hazardous interference between these applications. Middleware components include an optimized fault tolerance layer that is automatically generated by TTTech tools. Different network controllers for layered TTP, layered FlexRay, and TTEthernet were implemented in prototype versions.
